A very popular and healthy root
Curcuma (curcuma longa) is a root related to ginger. It is mainly grown in India. From the root, the spice Turmeric, also known as Koenjit, is made. Turmeric powder has a deep orange-yellow colour that is frequently used in Indian cuisine as a colouring and flavouring agent in many dishes. Turmeric is mildly bitter, tastes like black pepper and has an earthy mustard-like fragrance.
Our turmeric powder is germ reduced. Because organic products are not sprayed with pesticides, bacteria, fungi and insects have it a lot easier. Therefore, some organic products undergo a process whereby they are made germ-free after harvest.
Applications of Turmeric Powder
Turmeric is a must in Indian dishes like lentil soup and curries. You will also find it in recipes for Thai curry, In North African cuisine turmeric is often used with lamb and vegetable dishes. What nutrients do you find in Turmeric?
One of the constituents of turmeric is Curcumin. It is this substance that gives the distinctive yellow colour to turmeric. Curcumin is an antioxidant, which unfortunately is very poorly absorbed by your body. However, by adding black pepper to dishes containing turmeric, curcumin is better absorbed! Besides curcumin, turmeric also contains vitamins A, B12, B6, C and D and the minerals magnesium, calcium and iron.
