Some notes on walnuts
Walnut is usually referred to as the fruit of the common walnut or walnut tree (Juglans regia). Walnuts are grown in abundance in countries with a temperate climate. Warm summers and relatively cold to mild winters are an ideal climate. The walnut tree is popular because it repels mosquitoes. Walnuts can be gathered, 'clubbed' from the tree or harvested with a harvesting machine. Walnuts are not eaten fresh from the tree. After harvesting, the fruit is dried in a well-ventilated space for several weeks.
Healthy properties of Walnuts
Walnuts contain the minerals manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, iron and potassium. They are also a source of vitamin B1, gamma-tocopherol (a form of vitamin E) and folic acid.
Applications of Walnuts
Walnuts can be consumed as a snack, alone or in combination with other nuts in a mix. But walnuts can also be used as an ingredient in dishes. It is an important ingredient in baklava for example. They are also a suitable topping on cake and ice cream.
