The cranberry

The cranberry, also known as large cranberry or spoonberry, is a plant with thin stems. The plant is grown in North America. The cranberry prefers an acidic soil.

Commercial cranberry cultures emerged in the US and Canada in the 19th century. By 1864, the state of Massachusetts had more than 3,000 acres of cranberry fields. Europe was also interested in this cultivation because it was used against scurvy. In the Netherlands, interest in the cranberry arose when it was first discovered on Terschelling.

In 1845, a barrel of berries washed ashore on Terschelling, they spread and were discovered some time later.

Use and contents

Cranberries are used as a remedy for cystitis, among other things, because of the presence of a number of compounds such as proanthocyanidins, oxalic acid, benzoic acid and isophorone.

Men consume cranberries in different ways: fresh, dried, as juice, cooked and as capsules. These dried cranberries from Canada contain many vitamins, antioxidants and minerals, especially potassium and vitamin C.

These cranberries are dehydrated, which makes them suitable for use in salads, breakfast cereals or as a snack. The taste is less sour than the fresh cranberries, otherwise they are deliciously sweet.
