The scaly ink fungus (coprinus comatus) is a common mushroom that often grows on lawns along gravel roads and waste lands. The mushroom reaches a size of five to fifteen centimetres and has an egg-shaped cap. The cap of the mushroom is white with a light brown, smooth centre and covered with large, curled scales.

When young, it is an excellent edible mushroom, provided it is processed soon after picking. The scaly cuttle mushroom keeps very badly because of the autodigestion of its gills and cap.
