What is Oregano?
Oregano is a herb which is traditionally well known in Mediterranean cuisine, as the plant occurs naturally in Mediterranean areas in Europe. But oregano is finding its way into more and more other cuisines. It is also called wild marjoram. In the Netherlands, particularly in Limburg, wild marjoram can often be found beside roads and fields. Once the plant is there, it often stays there for a long time. Like many other herbs, the plant is a weed.
From leaf to powder
Our Oregano powder comes from organically grown oregano. The leaves are harvested, undergo a steam treatment for germ reduction, then dried and finally ground into powder.
The uses of Oregano
Oregano can be used both dried and fresh in dishes. If you use the fresh variety you should first wash the leaves and then cut and crush them. This way the flavours come out best. The dried variety can be added directly to dishes and the flavour is usually stronger than the fresh leaves. Oregano can be added to cold and hot dishes. If used in hot dishes, it is best to add it at the beginning of the cooking. Oregano will give more flavour if cooked for longer.
