The mysterious origin of the onion
The onion (Allium cepa), or garden onion, also known as ajuin or juin in the Southern Netherlands and Flanders, and siepel in the Northern Netherlands, is a plant from the narcissus family. The origin of the plant is unclear, but it probably stems from Central Asia, although wild specimens have never been found there. Writings from around 3000 BC show that the onion was first cultivated in parts of Asia, in Iran and Afghanistan. In this period, the onion was also cultivated in China and later in ancient India. From India, the onion was brought to Greece and Egypt.
Something about cultivation of the plant
The onion plant grows from seed. In the first year the bulb is formed, in the second year the plant will flower to reproduce.
Healthy properties of Onions and its uses
Onions are not only a vegetable, but also a flavoring, just like leeks, carrots and celery root. In Buddhist cuisine, onions are avoided because of their smell and supposedly aphrodisiac qualities. Onion granules are made from chopped and dried onion. Because onion is a flavour enhancer which itself contains very little nutrients, protein and fat, it is very suitable to intensify the taste of meat and fish dishes in a healthy way.
