Origin Nutmeg

Nutmeg (nuces moschatae) is a spice originating from the nutmeg tree. The nutmeg is oval in shape and about 2.5 centimetres long. The nutmeg is very hard: in the kitchen, the nutmeg is therefore only used in grated form.

There is evidence that the first use of nutmeg in Indonesia was on one of the Banda islands. These islands were the only place where nutmeg was produced until the mid-19th century.

Production process to Nutmeg Granulate

The nutmeg tree grows only in rainy tropical areas. The tree is evergreen and can be up to 20 meters high. There are several harvests per year. After harvesting, the nut will be stripped from the crack and the good qualities of the nutmeg are concentrated and processed into nutmeg granules.

Use Nutmeg Granulate

Nutmeg granulate is used as a spice to both savory and sweet dishes to provide it with a deep and bittersweet taste, which the nutmeg has. It can be used very well in such things as cake, biscuits, custard, stew, soup and curry.

Delicious in custard
I used the nutmeg granulate in a custard and it gave it a nice deep and sweet flavour. I will definitely be making this more often!
