Lentils Red Split Lightly Oiled Organic
Origin of Red Lentils
Lentils are the legume of a crop that was already cultivated in the Middle East in the 6000s BC. The actual lentil is the seed of the plant Lens culinaris. Red lentils are grown in Canada, U.S., Argentina, Chile and Turkey.
The red lentil is known for its gold and orange colour. Lentils have the second highest ratio of protein to food energy of all legumes, after soybeans making them a good supplement for people who exercise a lot.
What's in Red Lentils?
Lentils contain the carotenoids, lutein, zeaxanthin and polyunsaturated fatty acids. The fibre of the lentils ensures good digestion and intestinal function. Furthermore, it is a perfect source of protein which helps to build up cells and for all sorts of regulatory processes in the body. Lentils are also full of iron. Due to the high iron content, red lentils are often eaten by women, who are pregnant and by people suffering from anaemia.
In addition, lentils contain phosphorus, which strengthens the bones, magnesium, which converts food into energy and keeps the heart and blood vessels healthy, folic acid for the production of red blood cells and for nerve function and several B vitamins such as vitamin B1.
Lentils, finally, contain many healthy carbohydrates and fibres. The carbohydrates provide plenty of energy. A cup of lentils provides more than half of the recommended daily intake (RDA) of fiber. Some of the fiber is soluble fiber, some of which is considered prebiotic.
Applications of Red Lentils
Red lentils can be used in many ways: Lentils can be soaked, sprouted or baked, but most people cook them.
What makes red lentils distinctive is their nutty flavor, this combined with the fact that they are relatively quick to prepare makes the legume an ideal ingredient for curries or soup. Red lentils are very popular among vegetarians and vegans. Lentils are very suitable in meat substitutes because of their high nutritional value.
