What is kasha?

Organic kasha is a versatile grain variant made from roasted buckwheat. The term originally comes from Eastern Europe, where it means groats and often also refers to a porridge made from these groats. Thanks to its nutty flavor and firm kernel, this product is a perfect choice for anyone looking for a nutritious alternative to rice, pasta or other grains.

Preparation of roasted buckwheat groats

Our kasha is made from hulled buckwheat that is roasted in a rotating drum. During roasting the roasted buckwheat groats develop their characteristic aroma and color. After roasting the groats are cooled and sieved to produce a clean and dry final product.

Characteristics of organic roasted buckwheat

This organic kasha is made from carefully cultivated buckwheat and is naturally gluten-free. Unlike raw buckwheat groats, kasha has a more pronounced flavor and a firm texture. Kasha contains, among other things, magnesium (58.93% NRV per 100 grams), phosphorus (45.57%) and zinc (24.20%) per 100 grams, making it a rich and nutritious ingredient in a variety of products and recipes.

Usage and applications

You can prepare kasha by cooking it in water. A simple preparation is 1 part kasha to 2 parts water, simmering for about 6 to 8 minutes with a lid on the pan. For extra flavor you can briefly roast the groats beforehand in a dry frying pan over low heat.

Applications of kasha:

  • Delicious in yogurt, muesli or breakfast with milk, honey and fruit

  • As a base for salads with vegetables, oil and herbs

  • Eaten plain as a crispy snack with a light crunch

Crunchy grains with a nutty flavor
