Native to Europe and western Asia
The common hazel (Corylus avellana) is a widely used plant for hedging and fencing in England. But the main reason for humans across the whole of Europe and western Asia to cultivate the common hazel is for it's nuts.
The hazelnut
The hazelnut, also called cobnut, like many other nuts, is rich in protein and unsaturated fat. Hazelnuts also contain significant amounts of manganese, copper, vitamin E, thiamine, and magnesium. These hazelnuts are organically grown in Turkey and have been carefully selected for their size (between 11 and 13 mm).
Sensory properties of the hazelnut
The nutshells of these hazelnuts have been removed. The thin brown outer skin of the nuts remains and has a mildly bitter taste. The nut itself has a typical nutty taste. The taste many people identify as the taste of nuts, since the hazelnut is the most widely used nut in processed food like candy, chocolate and baking products.
