Details

This versatile fonio is a traditional grain from West Africa. Thanks to the short cooking time and the fine small grains, fonio is ideal for those looking for a practical and nutritious alternative to rice, couscous, or quinoa.

What is fonio?

Fonio is a cereal crop considered the oldest authentically African grain. This grain grows in dry areas on the edge of the Sahara, where it thrives on poor sandy soils and requires little water. Unlike other grains, fonio also grows where fertile soil is scarce, making it suitable for sustainable cultivation and helping to combat desertification and erosion.

Characteristics of African grain

The grains are small and light in color and are dried and processed after harvest. The appearance and texture resemble fine couscous. In addition to the white variety, there is also black fonio, but this type is cultivated less. On the European market, fonio is increasingly seen as an interesting alternative to other grains such as rice or quinoa.

Use and applications of cooked fonio

The uses of fonio are broad. Because of the short cooking time and simple preparation, it is ready quickly. Cooked fonio has a soft, airy texture and a slightly nutty flavor.

  • Use fonio as a replacement for rice, couscous, or quinoa

  • Ideal for salads, hot dishes, or as a base on the table

  • Can be prepared as porridge for breakfast, similar to oatmeal

  • Also suitable for baking or processing into flour for bread

For cooking, use about 1 part fonio to 2 parts water with a pinch of salt. Bring to a brief boil and then let it simmer off the heat.

What fonio contains in nutrients

Fonio is naturally gluten-free and contains no gluten, making it suitable for a gluten-free diet and for people with celiac disease. In addition, fonio naturally contains carbohydrates, proteins, and fiber.

Based on values per 100 g, fonio contains among other things iron (18.57% RI), zinc (18.50% RI) and copper (36.00% RI). It also contains magnesium (10.40% RI), phosphorus (13.29% RI) and proteins (14.00% RI).

The nutritional value of fonio is often compared to other grains, but it stands out because fonio contains essential amino acids that are less common in, for example, wheat. Because of this, fonio is seen as a versatile grain within various products and applications.

Light and quick to prepare
Tried fonio for the first time and I really like it. Cooks quickly and has a light, mild flavor. Convenient as an alternative to rice or couscous. The texture is nice, not sticky. The packaging is neat.
