What is Cardamom?
Cardamom plants (Elettaria cardamomum) grow mainly in higher and shaded areas near tropical forests with relatively high rainfall. These conditions are mainly found in Southeast Asia and Central America. Cardamom is also known as green cardamom and is related to ginger. Cardamom has a delicious sweet and pungent smell. Cardamom tastes like bergamot, lemon and camphor. The pods are dried after harvesting and then become matt green in colour. They are 1.5 to 2 cm long.
Healthy properties Cardamom seeds and applications
Cardamom contains many minerals such as iron, calcium, potassium and manganese. 1 tablespoon already contains 80% of the daily recommended amount of manganese. Cardamom is used in many dishes to add a refined flavour, for example in roasted minced meat and cooked sausages. It is also a commonly used spice in many Eastern and African dishes. Cardamom has a very specific flavour. If you use too much of it, it gives an overpowering and perfume-like flavour. The flavour of cardamom is aromatic, warm and fragrant. It fits well in sweet dishes, but can also be used in a stew.
