The Brazilian Brazil nut has a rich creamy flavour similar to the texture of a coconut. Brazil nut trees grow mainly along the banks of the Amazon and bloom during the dry season (basically autumn). The development of the fruit takes 14 months from pollination to a ripe Brazil nut. Brazil nut trees grow up to 50m high and the fruits are quite heavy. If in the rainy season the fruits are ripe, one waits until they fall from the trees so that the harvest only takes place on the ground.
Healthy properties Brazalian Brazil nuts
Why buy Brazil nuts? The nut contains many minerals, vitamins and healthy fats. The substance selenium that the nut contains is rare but necessary for proper functioning of the body. It is best to eat 2 to 5 Brazilian nuts per day. Too much is not good and can lead to selenium poisoning. The Brazil nut is generally used in pesto, but also goes well in baked goods like bread, cakes, biscuits and pies. Try the nut also in smoothies, salads and rice or couscous dishes. If you want to eat the nut on its own, of course that is also possible. A delicious way to eat the Brazilian nut on its own is in a mix with pecans, hazelnuts, walnuts and almonds, for example.
