Red Quinoa
Quinoa (Kinwa) originated in the Andes region of Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and Colombia, where it was used for human consumption 3,000 to 4,000 years before our era. Quinoa contains twice as much protein as rice and four times as much calcium as wheat! Quinoa also contains vitamin B, vitamin E, iron, copper, magnesium and amino acids such as lystin and cystinene. These essential amino acids are rarely found in other cereals and are also not produced by our bodies. And as if that were not enough, Quinoa is also gluten-free, which also contributes to the popularity of this superfood! There are 3,000 different types of Quinoa but the most common are White, Red and Black. Each colour has its own speciality. Red Quinoa is somewhat rarer than White Quinoa. It has a sweet nutty flavour and its red skin contains more fibre and nutrients than the white variant, making it healthier. Quinoa can be served cold or hot.
Using Red Quinoa
Quinoa seeds are used to replace rice in dishes. Rinse the Quinoa and cook it in about 10 to 15 minutes until tender. The red Quinoa is a bit harder after cooking than the white which makes it perfect to use in stir fry dishes or salads. Quinoa also goes well with meat and fish.
