Sucralose further explained
The artificial sweetener sucralose, sold under the name Splenda, is one of the rapidly rising "next generation" of sugar substitutes with great sweetening power. Sucralose contains no calories and is about 600 times sweeter than sucrose (white sugar). However, its sweetening power can vary from 320 to 1,000 times, depending on its application in food. Sucralose, the white crystalline powder tastes very much like sugar but is more intense in its sweetness. Whether sucralose is harmful? Judge for yourself.
Sucralose is produced by chlorination of normal sugar (sucrose), which chemically alters the sugar molecules' structure by replacing three hydroxyl groups with three chlorine atoms.
Other artificial sweeteners
As well as the artificial sweeteners described above, there are many sweeteners on the market. For a description of other sweeteners, we refer to the publication below (pdf).
