Background of Pea Protein Powder (Pisum Sativum SSP Arvense)
Pea is one of the oldest cultivated food crops. Evidence of cultivation dates back to the Neolithic period (4500 BC). They are an important food source, currently grown all over the world. Peas are one of the few plants that can remove nitrogen from the atmosphere, making them a sustainable crop since it means they do not need synthetically produced nitrogen fertilizer. Nitrogen nitrate is a common source of pollution when used excessively and penetrated into groundwater.
Proteins are made up of amino acids, usually described as the building blocks of proteins. Next to water (about 75%), protein is the largest component of muscle, on average 20%. When muscles are put under pressure, through exercise or weight training, for example, the proteins break down and the muscle fibres secrete. The process of recovery and growth, known as protein synthesis, requires raw materials in the form of amino acids. To gain muscle mass, protein synthesis must exceed the amount of degradation.
Processing
Our pea protein powder starts with organically grown yellow peas, Pisum sativum ssp. arvense, known as field or dry peas. These differ from the peas (Pisum sativum ssp. Hortense) by their smooth surface. After harvesting, the peas are selected, cleaned and liquefied. The protein is extracted through a double separation process: the pure protein liquid is poured off and then purified. It is then dried, sieved, inspected and packaged for shipping.
Healthy Properties
Our organic pea protein powder has a protein content of at least 80% and contains all eight essential amino acids. Essential amino acids cannot be made by the human body and must be provided by our food.
Good quality protein intake is important for people of all ages and at all stages of growth. In older people, loss of muscle mass (known as sarcopenia) is a major health problem, as this vulnerability increases the risk of falling. Protein is an important component in bones and a daily supply of protein is required for contributing to bone maintenance.
With a minimum of 80% protein content, our pea protein is essential for anyone who wants to maintain or build muscle, or simply to add extra protein to their diet. Pea protein works well in a smoothie with our fruit powders and fits perfectly into your cooking and baking ritual. Just add a tablespoon or two of pea protein to soups and stews to give your body a secret protein boost.
