Anise Seeds Whole Organic
What is aniseed?
Aniseed (Pimpinella anisum) is a seed that comes from the anise plant. It is very similar in taste to Star Anise (Illicium verum). However, whereas star anise is the fruit seed of a tree, anise is a herb belonging to the umbellifer family. The seeds of anise are a commonly used ingredient for flavouring dishes. Aniseed has a sweet, warm liquorice-like flavour. This is caused by the substance Anethol, which is also found in Star Anise and Fennel. Aniseed is native to the eastern Mediterranean and western Asia.
Traditional Medicinal Effects of Aniseed
For centuries aniseed has been used as a remedy for flatulence and as an appetite stimulant.
Why buy Anise?
Aniseed is known for its liquorice aroma. Aniseed flavor is perhaps best known from the rusks with mice. Besides that, anise is used in many sweets from all over the world. It is also possible to spread some beaten egg whites with aniseed over biscuits or cake. Aniseed is also often used in different alcoholic drinks, like Ouzo, Raki, Pastis and Anisette. Furthermore, aniseed flavours bread, cakes, biscuits, fruit and gingerbread. In India, anise is used in curries and with fish. Aniseed is delicious with fruit such as apples, fish, nuts and vegetables such as pumpkin and carrot. Aniseed can also be ground into aniseed powder. This is used in recipes for, for instance, perry nuts. The advantage of aniseed powder is that you do not have pieces of aniseed in your dish, if you do not like that.
