Allspice or pimento, what's the difference?
Pimento (Pimenta dioica) is an important spice in Caribbean cuisine. Allspice's flavour is a combination of the herbs and spices: nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, and black pepper. The complex flavour comes from the dried berries of the allspice tree. Allspice is also called pimento, Jamaican pepper or allspice berry. The terms are synonymous. Allspice is a spice from Central America and the West Indies. Ground allspice is often used in savoury dishes with ham, chicken, turkey and potatoes.
Because of its flavour, it is also delicious in sweet and sour sauces and marinades. In Jamaica, allspice is part of the famous marinade for jerk chicken!
Allspice is also good for your health.
Allspice is packed with nutrients, including vitamins B3, B5, B6 and C and the minerals manganese, iron, calcium, copper and magnesium. In 1 gram allspice contains 65% of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C!
How to use Allspice?
Allspice was already known to the Aztecs and Mayans, who added it to chocolate. Add it yourself to hot chocolate, it is wonderfully warming and reminiscent of typical winter things like mulled wine and Halloween.
Piment powder is obtained by grinding the berries of the allspice tree and is used mainly in Caribbean cuisine. The taste of allspice is a mix of cloves, pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg. It tastes delicious in savoury dishes such as grilled meat, stews and (tomato) sauces but also in sweet dishes such as chutneys, jams and cakes. It is also a great seasoning for pickling vegetables and fruit! On Jamaica's white beaches, chicken is roasted in the famous jerk marinade over a wood fire. On hot summer days, grill your own jerk chicken on the barbecue.
