Origin of Acerola

The Acerola (Malpighia emarginata) is a broad-branched shrub or tree with slightly hairy branches. Although native to the Caribbean, it is also found in the northern part of South America. The species grows at altitudes of 1500 m. The fruit of this tropical plant is also called the Barbados cherry or West Indian cherry. Acerola cherries are cultivated in Hawaii, Southeast Asia, various parts of South America and the US state of Florida.

The ripe fruit has an orange to dark red skin and measures approximately 2 by 2.5 centimetres. The flesh is an orange-red juicy and sweet-sour vitamin bomb due to its high vitamin C content. It also contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6 and B12, polyphenols and minerals (calcium, iron, magnesium, copper, zinc, phosphorus, selenium and sodium).
